Dear members and friends of United Church congregations in the Hamilton area
As you may know, Ontario social assistance rates fall significantly below the poverty line: $733 for single people receiving Ontario Works and $1169 for those on the Ontario Disability Support Program. Escalating costs of food and accommodation make life more and more difficult for those dependent on these sources of income.
The Hamilton Social Work Action Committee (HSWAC) hopes you will attend a (virtual) Town Hall as a way of showing your support for an increase to the rates of social assistance. This event is on Monday, October 18, 6:30 – 8 pm.
Please register to Still Frozen in Time: Ontario’s Social Assistance Rates before Monday at 2:30 pm using the attached invitation. A link to join will be sent to you.
Please share this invitation widely to people on your mailing list, colleagues, volunteers and friends.
After the Town Hall a video will be prepared with a link sent to you along with a letter you may use as is or adapt to advise your MPP and/or others of your concern for the present low rates of social assistance.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me or Dr. Palmer with any questions. Acting together we can make a difference for the most vulnerable among us.
Sincerely
Heather Gregersen (289 520 0919)
Member of HSWAC
