New Vision Notes

Thursday February 6, 2025

Welcome to a new edition of New Vision Notes! We are grateful to be reaching you each week. This coming Sunday we mark the Fifth Sunday After Epiphany and the Second Sunday of African Heritage Month. Our worship will be led by Karen, and other fantastic folks from our New Vision Community.

***Change in Entry Door Location !***

New Vision needs to do some repair work on the building exterior! For everyone’s safety, some parts of the sidewalk around our building are now closed. Please continue to use the accessible door on the corner of Main and MacNab (close to our illuminated sign).

Thank You!

Thank you to everyone who organized, led and participated in New Vision’s Annual General Meeting last Sunday. We are grateful for the leadership shown in all of our committees and thank all outgoing and incoming members for their dedication to our faith community.

A Celtic Ceilidh!

Our friends in À La Mode Choir are holding a Celtic Ceilidh concert at Church of the Ascension (64 Forest Ave) this Saturday (February 8th) at 7:30pm. There will be lots of music and merriment, so don’t miss out! For tickets and more info, please visit https://www.alamodechoir.com

The Hamilton Palestine Land Exercise (PLE) team will be offering the exercise on Friday, February 14 from 3 – 5 in the Lower Hall. This is a participatory experience that tells some of the history of colonialism in the land of Palestine, much of which is now the state of Israel. After we explore the loss of land, we will debrief together and share our experience. Knowing history helps us understand the present. Because we want to limit the number of participants to 30 or less, please email rev.diane.blanchard@gmail.com to register.

It Didn’t Start on October 7: Zionism and its Victims: United Network for Justice and Peace in Palestine and Israel is presenting a series of 9 one-hour illustrated talks that trace Zionist / Israeli efforts to take the land of historic Palestine, dispossess the Palestinian inhabitants, and deny them fundamental human rights and self determination. Each talk is 60 minutes followed by 30 minutes of Q/A and discussion. The talks are introductory and non-academic and are suitable for anyone who wants to learn more. No prior knowledge of the history of Palestine / Israel is necessary. The talks were originally given at an Islamic Centre in BC in 2024. To register, please visit https://tinyurl.com/zy9k73kn

Marian, who voluntarily manages our Resource Room would like to share a list of guidelines for folks who would like to contribute:
  1. Please give only items that you would consider acceptable for yourself  (New or very gently used). Clothing should be in good shape: no missing buttons, broken zippers, stains, or tears.
  2. Underwear must be new and socks must be new/nearly new and clean.
  3. Please consider donating clothing that is S to XL in size (larger sizes have not been requested).
  4. Please consider donating practical, stylish and casual clothing (please avoid flashy/party outfits).
  5. Please avoid donating excessively branded items (large logos/sport team branded items) as no interest has been shown in them.
  6. Please do not donate souvenirs or ‘knick-knacks’ (these items have a special meaning for you but not for someone else).
  7. Household items should be practical, clean and in good working order.

Marian works hard to maintain our Resource room and spends a considerable amount of her time sorting and frequently disposing or donating impractical items to other organizations. She would truly appreciate if folks took more care to examine items they’re bringing before dropping them off.

The Resource Room could really use more coats, boots, casual shoes, running shoes, casual pants and shirts, blouses, and jeans.

Marion appreciates your generosity of spirit and invites you to reach out to her on Sunday and ask if you have any questions or concerns.

A Song of Faith – A Song of Faith, adopted in 2006, seeks to provide a verbal picture of what The United Church of Canada understands its faith to be in the historical, political, social, and theological context of the early 21st century. It is also a means of ongoing reflection and an invitation for the church to live out its convictions in relation to the world in which we live. Please click here to view (and/or download) this important literature.

Would you like to try leading a worship service? Our worship team is looking for some folks to consider leading worship. It’s a fun and meaningful way to contribute to our faith community! Please reach out to Julie or Dan to learn more about putting a service together.
