New Vision Notes

This Sunday is our concluding Sunday in the Season of Creation: Francis of Assisi Sunday, our blessing of the animals Sunday. St. Francis is famous for, among other works, his “Canticle to Brother Sun and Sister Moon.” The Canticle is the basis for the beloved hymn “All Creatures of our God and King” but it is also the basis for a recently penned hymn called “Mother Earth, our Mother Birthing.” Here is a verse from the hymn:

Sister Air, our sister lifting
Ev’ry creature born with wing;
Jesus shared the breath of forests,
Breath that makes our spirits sing.
Celebrate with all creation:
God has joined the web of life.

Come celebrate on Sunday the God who has joined the web of life! Bring a pet to be blessed, or a photo or other symbol of one, or of another of the animals of the world.

The event was a mix of speeches by leaders in the campaign and social justice commentary provided through spoken word and rap. NGen’s Mother Tareka was one of the featured performers. The photo is of one of the campaigners speaking to the crowd of about 80 people.

See you Sunday!
